Mary Atkins

My name is Mary Atkins

I started painting when I was 55 years old. After 4 years of attending courses , I wanted to learn techniques.  And the Arts Academy  is the place to learn them.
So I showed my work at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and was accepted. I moved to Friesland  and was accepted at the Minerva Academy in Groningen as well. In 2006 I graduated.
My fascination for colours came into being during my years of study. The interplay between colours and their mutual effect. Creating  new colours . This interaction of lines, shapes and colours manifests itself in my paintings.
I am of Scottish decent  ( the Mac Millan clan). In the paintings of the Mac Millan tartans I could let myself go in this interplay , despite the limitations of fixed colours and ptterns.
My work  distinguishes itself by a diversity of subjects and techniques . Some  paintings are meant to open people’s eyes and make them think.  My own experiences  ( Japanese  concentration camps ), wrongs in our society.
